Commonly known as blue daisy, blue dandelion, blue sailors, blue weed, bunk, coffeeweed, horseweed, ragged sailors, succory, wild bachelor’s buttons, and wild endive.
A common weed throughout Idaho that typically is found on roadsides, fields and waste places. It has been used for cultivating the root as a substitute for coffee and the leaves used in salads. If you’ve ever had endive in your salad, you’ve had a form of chicory.
As an invasive weed, chicory can be difficult to treat outside of chemical means. Getting the entire root is difficult and can often lead to more sprouts. Pre-emergent, post-emergent selective herbicides and non-selective herbicides are all effective against the spreading of seeds which happens in the fall.
