Weed: Common Chickweed

Commonly known as chickenwort, craches, maruns, and winterweed

Common chickweed is an annual that comes from Europe and has become a troublesome weed in lawns, gardens and greenhouses. It can be used as an herb for medicinal purposes or food for human consumption.

Common chickweed can spread from seed or through it’s root system. Seed germination takes place in the fall before the cool season. Mature plants often appear as mats or clumps. Common chickweed can be controlled with pre-emergent applications of a crabgrass preventer, a selective herbicide in lawns or near desirable plants or non-selective herbicides in waste areas or beds.
