Prostrate Knotweed

Polygonum aviculare

Weed: Prostrate Knotweed

Commonly known as birdweed, pigweed and lowgrass

Prostrate knotweed is a common perennial weed found in many areas around homes, waste areas, roads and sidewalks. Knotweed travels very easily via seed attached to mechanical means and clothes. The seeds of the knotweed can last for several years before germinating and germinate in the early spring.

The taproot of the knotweed is not very deep and can be easily pulled by hand. As with many weeds, the knotweed can be choked out by healthy plants and grasses. Pre-emergents and post-emergents (selective and non-selective) have a high success rate.
