Western salsify is a perennial or biennial that becomes branched in well-developed plants. It is of European descent and all are found in such habitats as old meadows, ditch banks, roadsides, and waste places. It is easily recognizable by its large, dandelion like, flower head. It can grow from 2 to 4 feet tall.
Younger plants are easier to control by pulling but as the plant ages it can be more difficult the deeper the taproot becomes. Selective and non-selective herbicides are effective at most stages.
