Commonly known as hoary cress
Whitetop is a perennial herb native to Eurasia and is an invasive species in North America, introduced by contaminated seeds in the early 1900s. Hoary Cress is found in cultivated fields, pastures, waste areas and roadsides.
The root system of Whitetop make it difficult to control. Mowing and tilling only exacerbate the problem as it stimulates the rhizomes to create more plants. Regular pulling at a young stage can begin to control a stand. Regular pulling throughout the summer may be needed. Non-selective herbicides are effective however Whitetop is usually found throughout other desirable plants that may be affected. Selective herbicides can be effective however some chemicals will harm surrounding plants. Proper chemical selection is vital.
